Rivers of Gorski Kotar

Rivers of Gorski Kotar

The region of Gorski Kotar, known as the ‘green heart of Kvarner’, features numerous rivers and lakes. The green and blue source of the River Kupa in the vicinity of the village of Razloge is one of the deepest water sources in Croatia. The wild upper course of the Kupa is ideal for extreme sports, while the lower reaches are quiet and intersected with artificial waterfalls that were used to power the mills. The River Čabranka is a 15-kilometre-long tributary of the Kupa that marks the border between Slovenia and Croatia along its entire length. Because of its cascades and rapids, this river is a favourite among fans of extreme sports. The River Dobra is an underground river that has two sources and stretches for a length of 108 km. It abounds in numerous fish species that you can sample in the local restaurants. Lake Lokve is an artificial lake covering an area of approximately 2 km2 with a depth of around 40 metres, which makes it suitable for fishing all year round. Because of its scenic surroundings, various cycling and walking tours are organised around the lake. Three more lakes are located in the area of Fužine. Lake Bajer is ideal for walking and cycling tours, and the best way to fully experience it is on board a tourist boat. Lake Lepenica is much larger and is known for hosting underwater orienteering competitions. During summer, it is popular for swimming with both tourists and locals, as its water temperature rises to a pleasant 23°C. Lake Potkoš is the smallest and newest lake, and is currently a very popular excursion site among the many visitors to Gorski Kotar. READ MORE

Mountain trails and walkways on the Crikvenica Riviera

Mountain trails and walkways on the Crikvenica Riviera

The Crikvenica Riviera is known for its scenic landscapes, which can be experienced while walking along one of its seven mountain trails. You can choose a trail closer to the coast to enjoy sea views and listen to the murmur of the waves, or a route in the hinterland to admire the lush green surroundings. The trail from Povile to Jadranovo leads along the coast for 30 km and features some interesting sights, such as a holm oak forest in the Dumboka area and the steep cliffs of Takla and Dumboka. If you’d like to enjoy beautiful views of the coast and Kvarner islands, or maybe the mountains of Velebit and Učka, then take a walk along the Karst and Sage Trail. It starts in Novi Vinodolski and leads to Orljak Pass. This trail offers wonderful views along its 28-km-long route. You can also start your adventure at Vinište mountain hut at an altitude of 300 metres, for this is the start of the 29-km-long Cliff Trail, which leads to the area of Uhanj just above the village of Drivenik, passing through a variety of landscapes ranging from rocky ground to mountain meadows, which makes walking along it particularly interesting. When hiking along the Cliff Trail, you can visit a variety of viewpoints and forts. Among them is Ledenice Fort, built in the 17th century for defence against the Turks. If you prefer even longer trails, we suggest you take the Green or Heavenly Trails, which extend for 45 and 53.7 km respectively. They start next to the hunting lodge in Luka Krmpotska at an altitude of 750 metres above sea level and end at the peak of Medviđak. The Roman and Degenia Trails are shorter (15 and 10 km) and start in Crikvenica and Sibinj respectively. The Roman Trail follows the course of the Dubračina stream for the most part and features various historical sites that shouldn’t be missed. The Degenia Trail takes its name from Degenia Velebitica, an endemic plant which was formerly believed to grow only on Mount Velebit. This trail leads from Sibinj to Kozica. Go for a shorter or longer walk in the area of Crikvenica and enjoy the relaxing views of its stunning landscapes! READ MORE

Walking on the island of Rab

Walking on the island of Rab

Even though it is one of the easier physical activities, walking is very rewarding for both recreational and more serious athletes. In the company of a professional guide, every trail, be it shorter or longer, becomes interesting and worth visiting. Start exploring the promenades and walking, cycling and hiking trails of Rab, which extend for more than 200 km. Don’t let this number discourage you, as the ascents on the island are quite gentle and thus suitable for people with different levels of physical fitness. To start off with, you can choose trail number 1, the Premužićeva Trail, which is 8 km long and stretches from the Lopar campsite to the hamlet of Matići. This trail is partly in the sun while some of it leads through forest areas that offer shade and a quiet atmosphere. Halfway along the route, you’ll come across the hidden valley of Fruga, a particularly impressive sight. We recommend you take your own food and water with you, since there are no water sources or restaurants along the way. The 15-kilometre-long Premužićeva Trail number 2 runs through a forest. Unlike trail number 1, there are some restaurants and bars along the way in the bay of Gožinka, should you need a break. Treat yourself to some local products and a drink. If you’re not a fan of forest paths and green surroundings, then the 14-kilometre-long Rab-Maman trail is ideal for you. It starts at the town walls of Rab, leads past St. Euphemia Bay and Kampor, follows a gravel road to Dumići Cove, and then runs along the coast all the way to the islet of Maman. If this is too long, you can catch a bus from Kampor or Dumići. The trail is only suitable for cyclists until you reach the islet. The islet can be explored either by boat or on foot. For more of an adrenaline rush, you can take the 20-kilometre-long trail between Mišnjak and Lopar. This trail is ideal for fans of škraping (a combination of rock walking, climbing, jumping and running). The top of Kamenjak offers a fantastic view of Kvarner Bay to the west and Mount Velebit to the east. Choose the trail you like best and get going! READ MORE

Sailing on the sea off Crikvenica

Sailing on the sea off Crikvenica

In the past, local people in Crikvenica were mostly fishermen and seafarers. As people here have always been closely connected to the sea, it is no wonder that the town is home to Val Sailing Club, whose youngest members are only 7 years old. Indeed, one is never too young to fall in love with the sea. This club is only for members, which means that its services are not available to tourists. However, you can still enjoy this sport by observing it from the shore. Our recommendation is to watch a sailing regatta, most notably the keelboat regatta during Fishermen’s Week in Crikvenica. If you want your children to enrol on a two-week sailing course, you should plan your stay in Crikvenica for the second half of June! READ MORE
